The Hungarian Rhapsodies, S, R (French: Rhapsodies hongroises, German: Ungarische Rhapsodien, Hungarian: Magyar rapszódiák), are a set of 19 piano pieces based on Hungarian folk themes, composed by Franz Liszt during –, and later in and Liszt also arranged versions for orchestra, piano duet and piano trio. Cziffra is known for his recordings of works of Franz Liszt, Frédéric Chopin and Robert Schumann, and also for his technically demanding arrangements or paraphrases of several orchestral works for the piano, including Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Flight of the Bumblebee and Johann Strauss II's The Blue Danube. Georges Cziffra () invariably polarized critical opinion, arousing stormy controversy everywhere he played. In works by the Viennese classicists Cziffra was rightly censured, yet his performances of Franz Liszt could provoke near hysteria among audiences. In their original piano form, the Hungarian Rhapsodies are noted for their difficulty (Liszt was a virtuoso pianist as well as a composer).

Cziffra () had a chequered career that ended with him as a reclusive figure after the tragic death of his conductor son. After escaping Soviet-dominated Hungary in he settled in Paris, where these recordings were made over several sessions during a three-year period at the Salle Wagram.
